Cooperatives important tool to economic development: FinMin Koirala

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Shanker Prasad Koirala has said the government has taken cooperatives as an important tool to economic development.

Inaugurating the 13th annual general meeting of the Janak Pashupati Saving and Credit Cooperatives in the capital city today, Finance Minister Koirala said he was confident that cooperatives could work for public welfare.

According to him, the budget of the current fiscal year has given priority to cooperatives.

There are 30,000 cooperatives across the country which has three percent contribution to revenue. Nearly a million people have got employments from the cooperatives, he added.

Moreover, Minister Koirala expressed worry over financial crime in the name of cooperatives. So, it was necessary to regulate such cooperatives, he stressed.
