Nepal to send 850 NA personnel to South Sudan

KATHMANDU, Jan 9: The government has decided to dispatch 850 Nepal Army personnel to be deployed as peacekeepers in the crisis-ridden South Sudan.

A cabinet meeting held at Prime Minister´s Office, Sindurbar, on Thursday, decided to send the peacekeepers following a request from United Nation General Secretary, Ban Ki Moon last week.

During a telephone conversation with Interim Election Government Chairman Khil Raj Regmi, the UN General Secretary had asked to send additional 500 Nepal Army personnel last week.

Earlier, the government decided to transfer 350 NA personnel to South Sudan, who are currently serving in Haiti as peacekeepers. The total number of peacekeepers from Nepal to be deployed in South Sudan would reach 850 following today´s cabinet decision.

Similarly, the cabinet meeting transferred 12 Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police.
