Medical students draw attention of govt towards deteriorating health of Dr KC

Students of all levels at the Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine (IOM) Teaching Hospital on Tuesday handed over a memorandum to Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi, drawing his attention towards meeting the demands of Dr Govinda KC who is on a hunger strike.

Dr KC has started a hunger strike on the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) premises since the last three days in protest against the appointment of a junior doctor to the post of the Dean at the IOM.

The students took out a rally from the TUTH and reached Chairman Regmi's official residence at Baluwatar to register the memorandum.

Dr KC is on a fast onto death to protest against the political interference at the IOM putting forth various demands and the government should be sensitive to his demands, said Akash Pokhrel, a doctor who is studying MBBS in orthopedics.

Medical faculty at IOM, Dr Maheshraj Sigdel, said that Dr KC's health was deteriorating and it was necessary to break his fast meeting his demands. He said that doctors working at the TUTH have closed various services over this issue and in Dr KC's support.

Among Dr KC's demands are establishing the IOM as an autonomous university, halting the process of providing affiliation to medical colleges and appointing office-bearers to the IOM based on seniority and performance. Dr KC started the hunger strike on Saturday.
