NC-UML leaders conclude malpractice in PR system

"Elections should be made inclusive. But as questions have been raised regarding the PR system, we should now think about the election system when while drafting the new constitution," said Rijal," We can no longer continue with the system."
KATHMANDU, JAN 04 - Leaders of Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have concluded that there were incidents of malpractice while choosing the candidates under the Proportional Representation election system.

Speaking at an interaction programme in the Capital today, NC leader Minendra Rijal said that questions were raised against the PR system and that it should not be protracted further. He was of the opinion that the fate of the PR system should now be decided by the to-be-drafted constitution.

"Elections should be made inclusive. But as questions have been raised regarding the PR system, we should now think about the election system when while drafting the new constitution," said Rijal," We can no longer continue with the system."

UML central member Karna Bahadur Thapa opined that the system of choosing PR lawmakers from the closed list of candidates had failed and it should not be enshrined in the new constitution.

"The practice of choosing candidates from the closed list will not be suitable in a country which does not have good practice of internal democracy and where there are no criteria for assessment," leader Thapa said.
